Assignment 03/12/2013

Assignment Tuesday, December 3: Search Internet (Webopedia) for example on the Open Source Initiative and write an entry in your blog about this topic. Make sure you include Images, links and text. Avoid making spelling mistakes or typing errors.

For this assignment I wasn't very sure if we had to use Webopedia to research on any topic like for example the Open Source Initiative, or if we had to research about the Open Source Iniative on for example Webopedia, so I did both of them.

MP3:

The MP3 is an audio format very commonly used to listen to music. MP3 is the name of the file for the MPEG audio layer 3. The audio layer 3 is one of the three coding schemes, which are the compression of audio signals. The difference between the layers 1, 2 and the 3
is that on the third layer, the layer uses "perceptual audio coding and psycho acoustic compression to remove all superfluous information".This means that this layers takes away the irrelevant parts of the sound signal which us humans can't hear. This layer also has a filter bank,  and increases the resolution 18 more than in the layer 2. The good thing about the MP3 format, is that the files are so small, that they can be easily transferred online.

The Open Source Initiative, OSI, is an "ONG" organization as to call it, because its non-profitable.
This organization promotes the integrity of the open source. This is done via a certification product with the OSI Certified Open Source Software. OSI is made up of a group of responsible and comprised board members "who make up its directorship and is not a membership organization".

OS: Operating System

What is an operating system?
An operating system is the most important program that runs the computer. The operating systems recognize the input on the keyboards, recognize the printers, and they keep track of the files.

What is the difference between an OS, an application, and an app?
An OS is the system software allowing computers to work. Applications are the softwares you install in the OS of your computer. Finally, and app is an abbreviation for application, and has a smaller weight program.

What are the main operating systems in the world?
Windows 7: OS released in 2009, it includes several multimedia features as well as the famous “windows touch”.

Windows 8: OS released in 2012. Has a new interface in use in comparison with windows 7.

Ubuntu: OS released in 2004. Is a combination of Macintosh and Windows. Has a similar look to the mac, but the shortcuts are similar to windows.

Windows XP Professional: released in 2001. Is a better version of Windows 9.5.

Macintosh OS X: released in 2001. All mac computers run with this OS X since its beginning.

Write a brief comparative report of operative systems (Windows, Mac OS, Linux).
The differences between Windows and Mac are not many. In the old days, there used to be more notable differences, but nowadays this two OS are basically the same. ON the other hand, Linux is a free OS that comes with the not so powerful computers.

Why do you use the operating system that you use? Give 3 reasons.
My Operating System is Windows 7. The main reason I have this OS is because is the one my father installed in my computer when he first bought it. Second of all, I really happy with Windows 7 because it contains all the things I need. The last reason I have this Operating System, is because its of very simple use, and I don’t really need anything fancier. I am very happy with this one.

My Summer Vacations

My Summer Vacations: by Elena Lamana

This 2013 has been really entertaining. First of all I stayed here for the last few days of June. Then on the second of July I got onto a plane and headed towards Madrid to get another plane direction to Boston, USA. I did not do this all by myself, I went through all this with a group of 20 students like myself.
This students were staying one month in Boston like me, and were going to go to the same school as I was going and doing the same activities, the only difference is that we were all in different host families.

After that awesome month in Boston, I came back to Bilbao for about a week. After that boring week back in my city, Claudia and I got into a plane with my parents towards Munich, and then to New York. When we got to New York, USA we stayed there for a few days. We did a lot of shopping, tourism and most important of all we enjoyed our stay for the little time we were there. I really hope I can get to go another time there for more shopping in Soho, and more shows in Broadway, since we didn't get to see any at Broadway, just a comedy show in the outskirts of Time Square. But it was all great, and the best part was that I was with a friend.

Then after staying in New York, we
meet Sara and her mother to go to South Hampton, Long Island with them for two weeks. Once we where there we had a lot of fun. We went to the beach, got tanned, drank lemonade and went shopping. it was really great getting to see where Sara goes all summers and brags all about, now I get it. Long Island is really something to brag about since it's a great and really relaxing place. I think the best part was when one night we went to a beach party and we danced until the party was almost over we all ad great fun.

When it was time to come back to Bilbao, Vizcaya, I was really glad that we had arrived just in time for the Bilbao Jaiak or at least for the Nancys Rubias and Alaska concert. Here is a video to one of there performances:

After that concert there was even more partying. Claudia and I where invited to Angeliki's hometown party week. This all happened in the little village of Artziniega, Álava.
We stayed there from Wednesday until Sunday morning. We had lots of fun and we got to meet really great people that have becomes our friends. We really are hoping she'll invite us also next year. That's basically all I did during my 2013 summer.

Scribus Experience

For this unit in technology, we have been learning to use the program Scribus.
Scribus is a great program used for desktop publishing, in which you can do very professional looking layout pages. Not just can you type, but you can also insert high quality images, shapes and many other setting equipment.

This is what a Scribus page would look like while you're using it:

While using Scribus I learned to do many useful things that newspaper, and magazine article writers use everyday. Like for example I learned to do columns of text, to insert images, to insert shapes, and other more typical things like changing the letter color and font types. Another useful thing I learned to do was to convert the Scribus file into a PDF one in order to make it compatible with other computers. You can also do more complicated things, but since I learned to do everything on my own, I think I did quite a good job at learning at least the things I learned.

This are some photos of people using Scribus for different things:

Desktop Publishing

In this assigment I have to talk about Desktop Publishing and other main things important to have and know about technology.

Definition of Desktop Publishing: Editorial work computer assisted. Home Edition which has been made possible thanks to the advancement in technology and electronics that allow modern computers. Equivalence: DTP.

Possible uses of DTP for:

1. Graphic Design. This is the number one use for desktop publishing and can be held accountable for why the term has changed so much over the years. Professional graphic designers use DTP programs such as QuarkXPress, Adobe PageMaker, and Adobe Photoshop to create webpages, the front pages of newspapers, and a variety of other visual documentation. Thanks to DTP, graphic design has become more than just pencil and paper. The introduction of desktop publishing has taken graphic design to greater heights. Without desktop publishing, there is no graphic design, and vice versa.

2. Career Assistance. Word processing also has also played its part in the DTP world. Microsoft Word and Open Office are used faithfully by numerous job seekers everyday as they work to put together the perfect resume, cover letter, or portfolio. Many create documents from scratch, while others take advantage of the oh-so-convenient templates.
3. Education. In the education field, teachers and students use a variety of DTP programs to complete assignments and projects. Whether it’s an Intro to Desktop Publishing course and the program of choice is QuarkXPress, or a Technical Writing Course that takes an in-depth look at Microsoft Word, the use of DTP in educational institutions is very prevalent.
4. Business. Today, desktop publishing is pretty much used to handle all of the “paperwork” of a business. Although it’s possible to run a business without the help of DTP, it isn’t the smartest business decision. From sole-proprietorships to Fortune 500 companies, DTP software is a lifesaver and money saver. Examples of DTP use in businesses are business cards, legal documentation, and advertising materials.
5. Crafts and Personal Projects. Desktop publishing is the crafter’s dream come true. Across homes all over the world, parents are looking for easy, cheap, and fun crafts to create with their children, teachers need ideas for students, and the interior decorator could use an origami template. Those who use DTP software for personal use normally stay away from the more advanced DTP software and stick with the more user friendly programs. Examples of desktop publishing projects for personal use are greeting cards, postcards, and invitations.

Main elements in Desktop Publishing: Fonts, image boxes, columns: The elements of design are the building blocks of all designs, chosen to convey the message — beyond the actual words or photos used. Desktop publishing documents utilize the five elements of design : lines | shapes | mass | texture | color.

 Main programs you use:
-Layout/design: I don't use any kind of programs for this, because I don't use this two things for anything.
-Image processing: I use the Photoshop and Gimp programs, and online I use Picnik.

The spread: what it is: Difference between lending rates charged by the bank catchment and the bank pays savers. The difference is your profit or spreads.

PDF: the format for printing: PDF (Portable Document Format) is a file format that has captured all the elements of a printed document as an electronic image that you can view, navigate, print, or forward to someone else. PDF files are created using Adobe Acrobat , Acrobat Capture, or similar products. To view and use the files, you need the free Acrobat Reader, which you can easily download. Once you've downloaded the Reader, it will start automatically whenever you want to look at a PDF file.
